What can you do?

Those of us who allow animals into our hearts and homes usually understand intellectually that the animal may reach its full life span while in our care. Emotionally, we also understand that we may never wish to part from their company.

However, there are things that we can do when we realize that our pet is near the end of their life that will make them feel better as they experience the transition and help us to know we’ve done all within our power to extend the quality of their life as long as practical.

Discuss Hospice Care with Your Veterinarian
Determine if your veterinarian is willing and able to provide your pet and you with options to help you provide in home (if medically possible) support to your animal. Your veterinarian should be comfortable with teaching you how to perform simple medical tasks like providing medications and fluids to your animal. In addition, you should feel that your veterinarian is sensitive to the relationship that you have with your animal and be supportive of you during this transition. If you experience some resistance from your veterinarian about these types of services or you feel that you are being encouraged to prematurely euthanize your animal, you may wish to ask for a referral to a veterinarian who provides hospice services.

Determine Quality of Life Indicators
Discuss with your veterinarian those things that represent quality of life for your pet. Remember, these are deeply personal to you and the animal. No one other than you and your animal knows what makes them happy. It may be a walk in the park, a special toy, dinner or maybe extra time with you. It is important to verbalize these things because it can help you to understand when your friend is trying to say good bye to you.

Identify Options
Discuss with your veterinarian options for supporting your pet. Depending on the circumstances, some things that veterinarian may suggest include pain medication, fluids, nutrition supplements, supportive devices.

Provide Support and Observe Behavior
While supporting your pet, observe their behavior and take detailed note of their condition. You can provide your veterinarian with valuable insights that can minimize your pets suffering.

Finally, when you are ready, determine how you wish to handle end of life issues.
